Prospects are more important than profits

I’ve just seen Theodore Zeldin on tv. He is a historian I’ve heard of before, but don’t know much about him yet. He said that one reason young people drink so much is that many of them ‘have a certain amount of money but no prospects’.

How true. People must have prospects. Hope in the future is worth more than a transient but large amount of disposable cash that is accompanied by a sense of foreboding and a feeling of limited opportunity. We all need a useful role in life.
